Measuring Safety Improvement

The members of API envision a petroleum industry that conducts and manages its operations safely and with respect for the environment and the safety of its workers and the public. Because of this commitment, the collection of safety data in the form of benchmarking surveys reflects the industry's desire to provide a consistent, reliable and accurate industry metric for measuring and tracking safety trends and to promote its continuous improvement. Benchmarking surveys help companies understand how efficient they are over a host of issues and lead to improvements in their programs.  Examples of safety surveys include:

  • API Guide to Report Process Safety Incidents is a publication on API's newly implemented revised process safety measurement system for reporting process safety incidents.  The guide provides guidance to global refining and petrochemical companies on the collection of and reporting of "lagging" process safety performance incidents.

  • The Survey on Petroleum Industry Occupational Injury and Illness Report (OII) is an annual summary that reports on cases under the US Bureau of Labor Statistics record keeping deadlines.  The report includes information regarding injuries, illnesses, fatalities, lost workday cases and incidence rates by function.  The results of this survey are distributed only to participants; however, aggregate data from this survey can be obtained online at http://global.ihs.com or by phone at 1-800-854-7179.

We are optimistic about the progress we have made so far, but we are mindful of the public's expectations of us as well as our expectations of ourselves — expectations that we take seriously in our quest for a safe workplace.
