Human RIghts and High Standards

Unocal's investment in the Yadana natural gas pipeline project in Myanmar (Burma) has been sharply criticized by some activists for alleged human rights abuses by the military in the pipeline area. The company has worked with Total, the project operator, to ensure that no human rights violations occur on this project and that communities in the pipeline region are free of abuse. Unocal continues to closely monitor activities in Myanmar. A number of international journalists and third-party independent organizations have undertaken their own site visits to the pipeline region. In October 2002 and April 2003, the Boston-based Collaborative for Development Action conducted 2 field assessments of this project and its impact on local communities. The Yadana project has introduced a comprehensive program of socioeconomic initiatives in the 23 villages along the pipeline corridor. This includes access to primary health care, new schools, improved roads, bridges and other infrastructure, and a variety of agricultural and small business opportunities. As an investor in Myanmar, Unocal encourages dialogue and respect for human rights. Company representatives regularly discuss humanitarian concerns with government officials, as well as with NGO leaders and other foreign representatives active in that country. A new Unocal report issued in March 2003, “Progress & Prosperity Along the Pipeline Route,” reviews the history of the project and describes the benefits it has brought to the 43,000 villagers and farmers who live and work in the pipeline region.
