API and Information Handling Services (IHS®) jointly launched the API Engineering Partnership program to make API's oil and natural gas industry standards more accessible to graduate and undergraduate petroleum engineering schools at select universities and colleges in North America.
The API Standards and Publishing program includes publication of approximately 550 technical standards, presenting proven engineering and operating practices and promoting the use of safe and interchangeable equipment and material meeting those standards.
To enable the most widespread, practical and valuable use of API standards by students and faculty, API and IHS® provides complimentary, Internet-accessible subscriptions to the complete collection of API standards to the schools. The donation of services provides a key component in educating petroleum engineers about the practical uses of API standards in the global petroleum industry. It also will help universities in preparing a strong workforce for the future in the industry.
The gift by API and IHS® supports schools taking advantage of the offer in meeting a key component of current accreditation criteria for petroleum engineering curriculum, set by the Engineering Accreditation Commission, which requires incorporating engineering standards into the curriculum. The subscription allows access to five users simultaneously, which should accommodate several hundred individual users. The retail value of the entire collection is $85,000. The annual subscription value of the entire collection being donated is $19,000.
API also is granting each school the printing and distribution rights to portions of API standards for use as handouts to its students and to entire individual API documents for student use. Upon request, API also will grant students at recipient schools the right to include portions of API documents or entire API documents for the preparation of, and inclusion in, their theses or dissertations.
