The workforce of the 21st century needs to be technology savvy in order to be successful. Unfortunately, many of the children and families in underserved communities do not have access to technology programs and skills they will need to be successful.
Shell launched a technology-donation program, called the Shell Digital Divide Initiative in fall 2001. The Initiative partners with community schools and nonprofit organizations. To date more than 60,000 lives have been touched, more than 3,000 computers have been donated and more than 60 nonprofits and 17 schools have benefited from the project in the U.S.
In 2002, the guidelines for donation were adopted internationally and 48 countries have participated in the program. Through the donations, Shell is providing access to technology and training programs in underserved communities that is helping to open new career opportunities to individuals.
