New World in Nigeria

An ExxonMobil apprentice-training program in Nigeria is creating skilled laborers while giving Nigerian students their first chance to join the global workforce.

The program teaches electrical, mechanical, instrumentation and process skills. All students take basic courses in each area for six months, then specialize in one area for the remaining 15 months of study.

To help more students qualify for the apprentice-training program, ExxonMobil launched a pre-apprentice-training program late last year. That six-month course offers such general-knowledge classes as science, math and English.

The apprentice-training program has been accredited by the guilds in the United Kingdom and Canada´s Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. “This program gives graduates the skills to build a career and a better life. That strengthens the communities in which we do business,” says Jim Broussard, technical training manager.
