Partnering with Local Fire Protection Agencies

At Marathon's refineries, the in-house fire department trains with local fire departments who might be called on to assist if a fire occurs. Marathon also emphasizes fire-fighting training through employee attendance at industry-recognized facilities, such as Texas A&M.

The refineries also sponsor local firefighter attendance at this training. Emergency response equipment is kept state-of-the-art as recently demonstrated when the Canton Refinery purchased a new fire truck to enhance its response capability.

For more than 12 years, the Garyville refinery has provided emergency response training to the volunteer fire departments of St. John Parish, as well as members of local public agencies, including the Louisiana State Police Hazmat Team and Office of Civil Defense. Marathon's Garyville and Robinson Refineries are STAR participants in OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program.

Exemplary safety performance is a direct result of employee awareness and refinery safety process implementation. STAR participants are the best safety and health performers in the United States. Only 745 facilities in the United States have been accepted into this elite program.
