Emergency and Spill Response Preparedness

For the past 35 years, the API has worked cooperatively with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Environmental Protection Agency bringing together industry experts to share information and discuss problems and solutions regarding oil spills as part of its biennial “International Oil Spill Conferences.” Many API members participated in the formation and continued activities of the “Marine Spill Response Corporation” and the “Great Lakes Spill Prevention Initiative.” Along the Gulf of Mexico, employees from several companies participate in annual beach and coastal clean-ups. ExxonMobil supported the establishment of a network of worldwide industry-supported oil spill response organizations that are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year around the world and strategically located around the world near major airports to facilitate the rapid transportation of equipment and experts to spill sites. Alyeska Pipeline spends over $60 million annually on oil spill prevention and response in Prince William Sound, and has over 300 dedicated personnel assigned to this effort, mostly through its Ship Escort/Response Vessel System (SERVS).

Cleaning Up the Seas off Alaska
Alaska Clean Seas (ACS) is the spill response cooperative for the oil companies that operate on the North Slope of Alaska. BP's exploration and production business is a member, providing financial and technical support for ACS. The cooperative is the main response organization BP relies on for any oil spills at our North Slope operations.

Spill Response Coalitions in Canada
Petro-Canada is a member of two organizations certified by the Canadian Coast Guard to act during a spill into navigable waters: the Western Canada Marine Response Corporation and the Eastern Canada Response Corporation.

Creating Benefits from a Hurricane Disaster
In October 2002 when Hurricane Lili’s 140 mph winds and driven seas destroyed the Eugene Island 275 platform off the Louisiana coast, TOTAL E&P USA, INC. acted quickly and responsibly by investing all necessary resources to minimize the impact of the incident on the Gulf of Mexico. The wreck was safely cleared while the company took special consideration to protect the environment, facilitate biodiversity and exceed platform abandon requirements.
