Wildlife Habitats
Ecological stewardship is an integral part of Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC’s (MAP) commitment to Responsible Care.® Through its Wildlife Habitat Program, MAP improves the appearance of its properties, supports unique ecosystems and provides opportunities for environmental education and community involvement. MAP presently has nine wildlife sites that are certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council. Several other locations have initiated projects that are expected to result in certification.

EPA Environmental Performance Track Member
In January 2002, MAP’s Garyville refinery was awarded membership in EPA’s National Environmental Performance Track. The Garyville Refinery was the first, and to date only, refinery in the United States, to be so honored.

Marathon Employees Provide Assistance to the Communities in Which They Work
Over the last 12 years, Garyville refinery employees have provided assistance in the development of the Industrial Mechanical Program at the Louisiana Technical College in Reserve, Louisiana.

National Coalitions and Programs for Teachers
Marathon Facilities Participate in Local Initiatives to Bridge the Gap between Business and Education
Experts on a variety of subjects, including engineering, environmental management and safety, MAP employees frequently visit the local schools in their communities. During these visits, they teach students about the petroleum industry and the important functions MAP facilities provide in the community. Students are often invited to tour the facility to see first hand what goes on at MAP.

Environmental (Marine and Wildlife) Health and Safety Education Programs
Partnering with Local Fire Protection Agencies
At MAP’s seven refineries, the in-house fire department trains with local fire departments who might be called on to assist if a fire occurs. MAP also emphasizes fire-fighting training through employee attendance at industry-recognized facilities, such as Texas A&M.

Wildlife Habitat Education Programs
Over the past three years, through the Wildlife Habitat Council’s Corporate Lands for Learning program, volunteers of the Catlettsburg, Kentucky, Refinery Wildlife Team have hosted over 600 school children for natural science and conservation programs at the refinery’s Savage Branch Reserve.

In 1999, MAP was one of the first companies to become a pioneer company in the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NRPA) Responsible Care Partnership Initiative, which focuses on improvement through implementation of key HES practices.

Disaster Preparedness and Security Assurance Programs
Meritorious Service Award
MAP employees are often recognized for their service and their skills as was evidenced in an employee’s recent participation in the development of a Mutual Aid 'Resource Typing' initiative for response to chemical, biological and weapons of mass destruction incidents. Serving as the industry representative on the U.S. Coast Guard’s Chemical Transportation Advisory Committee, a MAP employee helped the group identify, review and make recommendations on industry standards for hazardous substance response organizations. The on-going initiative is headed by FEMA for the Office of Homeland Security. Recognizing his efforts, the Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard awarded the MAP employee with the Meritorious Public Service Award.

Security Partnerships
MAP Corporate Security has established strategic partnerships with the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Bureau of Investigation (Infragard and Awareness of National Security Issues/Response program-ANSIR), ASIS International, Energy Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ISAC) and NPRA Security Committee.
