Survey Description

Industry-Wide Surveys
Industry-wide surveys are described briefly below. Free reports can be obtained by clicking on the report title. Contact information for other reports is included in each description.

U.S. Petroleum Industry’S Environmental Expenditures (1995-2006)
A comprehensive look at how much the industry spends on environmental protection – as a whole and by industry sector. Estimates of the expenditures are based on an industry-wide survey conducted by API. Expenditures are shown by type (Capital and Operation & Maintenance), for each sector as well as by medium (Air, Water, Wastes, and Other). This is a free report. Oil Spills in U.S. Navigable Waters (1997-2006)
This report uses Cost Guard data to tabulate oil spills that occur in, or reach, navigable waters under U.S. jurisdiction, including bays, harbors, rivers, lakes, sounds, and oceans up to 200 miles from shore. The data are aggregated by yearly frequency and size group for spills, by yearly volumes for vessels and facilities, and frequency and volume of spills by product spilled. This is a free report. Workplace Safety for the U.S. Oil and Natural Gas Industry
This report compares the rates of job-related injuries and illnesses in different segments of the U.S. oil and natural gas industry with those in the U.S. private sector. The report is based on information from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) publication, Occupational Injuries and Illnesses: Counts, Rates, and Characteristics. This is a free report. Greenhouse Gas Emissions
This is API's first annual survey on greenhouse gas (HIGH) emissions from U.S. oil and gas industry companies. Companies will report their 2005 greenhouse gas emissions as well as "normalization factors" so that emissions intensity of operations can be calculated. Companies participating in this survey will be able to compare their greenhouse gas emissions or emissions intensity progress against aggregate industry performance. Joint Association Survey on Drilling Costs
The only long-term source anywhere for detailed information on estimated U.S. drilling expenditures. Conducted annually since 1954, this survey of twenty-one Summary Tables and fifty-six State/Area Tables contains hard-to-find data on the number of oil and gas wells and dry holes drilled, their accompanying footage, and their estimated drilling costs for all active drilling areas – both onshore and off – in the U. S.  Data on drilling expenditures for exploratory and development wells, horizontal wells, coal-bed methane gas wells, sidetrack wells and water depths are presented in detail. A comparison of the impact of price change on the drilling costs is also included. Contact Jeff Over at obermiller@api.org.
Quarterly Well Completion Report
This report contains the most comprehensive statistics available on current and historical U.S. drilling activity. Published quarterly, the report provides detailed information on the reported, as well as the estimated, total number of wells and footage drilled for the current quarter and prior quarters. Both estimated and reported data are disaggregate by well type, depth interval and quarter for the current year and two prior years. Total estimated data are also broken out into exploratory and development wells by quarter for the past decade. The data on reported drilling includes well and footage information by quarter by state/area.  Separate tables for reported wells are also provided for the current year and two prior years for total, exploratory, development, and new-field wildcat wells as well as by depth intervals for the total U.S., exploratory wells, total onshore and total offshore. Contact Jeff Over at obermiller@api.org.

Sales of Natural Gas Liquids and Liquefied Refinery Gases
The only source of data on the annual sales of Natural Gas Liquids and Liquefied Refinery Gases. Estimates of the expenditures are based on an industry-wide survey conducted by API. Data are tabulated by State and by end-use (e.g., residential use or farm use) and by product (e.g., Ethane or Propane). Contact Pamela Gibson at gibson@api.org.
